About Château des évêques
At Lavérune, just outside Montpellier, the Château des Évêques was for centuries the summer residence of the bishops of Montpellier, an elegant country château surrounded by gardens. Rebuilt in graceful classical style, the château today belongs to the town and houses a museum of art, notably a collection of paintings and works given by the artists Hofer and Bury, displayed in the refined setting of its historic rooms. Its handsome façades, formal gardens and peaceful atmosphere make it a delightful place to visit, a green retreat away from the bustle of nearby Montpellier. Elegant, historic and welcoming, the Château des Évêques combines fine architecture, gardens and art in one refined ensemble, offering a pleasant cultural stop that recalls the wealth and leisure of the old bishops of Montpellier in the sunny countryside of the Hérault.
