Set in a former royal hospital surrounded by beautiful gardens at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, near Paris, the Maurice Denis Museum is devoted to the painter Maurice Denis and his circle, the Nabis — a group of artists who, at the turn of the 20th century, revolutionised painting with flat planes of colour, decorative harmony and spiritual themes. Denis lived and worked in this house, which he called the Priory, and its rooms and chapel, which he decorated himself, now display his works alongside those of fellow Nabis such as Bonnard, Vuillard, Sérusier and Vallotton. The tranquil terraced gardens offer lovely views over the Seine valley. Peaceful, refined and richly artistic, the Maurice Denis Museum offers an intimate encounter with a key movement of modern art in the very setting where much of it was created — a delightful cultural haven near Paris.
