About Site Hillman

On the heights above Colleville-Montgomery, near the D-Day landing beaches of Normandy, the Hillman site is a remarkable complex of German fortifications that played a significant role on 6 June 1944. This vast network of concrete bunkers and command posts, dug deep into the ridge overlooking Sword Beach, was a formidable strongpoint that British forces had to overcome in the hours after the landings. Today the preserved site, with its restored bunkers and interpretive displays maintained by dedicated volunteers, allows visitors to walk through the underground galleries and understand the fierce fighting that took place here. Sober, authentic and deeply evocative, the Hillman site is an important place of memory that honours the soldiers who fought and fell, and helps visitors grasp the reality of the Normandy landings. This is a solemn subject connected to war and sacrifice.
