About Baie d'Authie
A small, wild estuary on the border of Picardy and the Pas-de-Calais, the Baie d'Authie is a lesser-known sister to the great bays of the Opal Coast, where the river Authie winds through dunes and salt marsh to meet the sea near the resort of Berck. At low tide it reveals broad, shimmering flats of sand where colonies of harbour and grey seals haul out to rest — one of the easiest places in northern France to see them in the wild. Great dune systems, reed beds and mudflats make it a haven for birds, and marked paths lead walkers through the marram grass and along the shore. Quiet, natural and rich in wildlife, the Baie d'Authie is an unspoiled gem of the northern coast.
