About Baie de Saint-Brieuc

A great scoop out of the north Breton coast, the Baie de Saint-Brieuc is a vast bay of huge tides, where the sea withdraws to reveal enormous flats of sand and mud rich in shellfish — including the celebrated scallops that make the bay one of France's great fishing grounds. At its head, part of the foreshore is protected as a national nature reserve, one of the most important sites in Brittany for migrating and wintering birds, drawing waders and wildfowl by the tens of thousands. Around the shore lie resort towns, cliffs and beaches, and a coastal path traces the bay's sweep. Wild, tidal and teeming with birdlife, the Baie de Saint-Brieuc is a great natural larder and sanctuary of the northern Breton coast.
