About Baie de Somme

Ranked among the most beautiful bays in France, the Baie de Somme is a vast, luminous estuary on the Picardy coast where the river Somme meets the Channel in a shifting mosaic of sand banks, salt marsh and huge skies. It is above all a paradise for wildlife: hundreds of harbour and grey seals haul out on the sands at low tide, and the marshes and reserves are one of the great bird sanctuaries of northern France, alive with migrating waders and geese. Around the bay, seaside towns like Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, a little steam railway and long walks across the sands draw visitors year-round. Wide, wild and ever-changing with the tides, the Baie de Somme is the great natural jewel of the Picardy coast.
