About Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel
One of the most magnificent bays in the world, the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel is famous for its immense tides — among the highest in continental Europe — which sweep in across the sands "at the speed of a galloping horse" to lap the ramparts of the legendary abbey-island. When the sea withdraws, it lays bare a vast expanse of shimmering sand and mud flats, grazed at their edges by the sheep whose salt-marsh lamb is prized across France. Guided walks lead barefoot across the bay to the Mont, revealing quicksands, tidal channels and huge skies, while birds throng the estuaries. Straddling Normandy and Brittany and listed by UNESCO, the bay is a landscape of extraordinary drama, where land, sea and sky are forever changing.
