About Ballon d'Alsace

Where Alsace, Lorraine and Franche-Comté meet, the rounded summit of the Ballon d'Alsace rises to 1,247 metres, a gentle grassy dome that was one of the very first mountains developed for tourism in France. Long a symbolic border between France and Germany, it is crowned by a statue of Joan of Arc and offers wide views over the southern Vosges, the Jura and the Alps beyond. In summer its pastures and forests draw walkers, cyclists (it has featured in the Tour de France since 1905) and paragliders; in winter it becomes a family ski and snowshoe area. With the source of the Moselle nearby, the Ballon d'Alsace is an accessible, history-rich gateway to the high Vosges.
