About Belle-Île-en-Mer

The largest of the Breton islands, Belle-Île-en-Mer lies off the coast of the Morbihan, a windswept plateau of moor and farmland fringed by a spectacular, deeply indented coastline. Its wild western shore, the Côte Sauvage, is a rampart of cliffs, sea-caves and rock stacks battered by the Atlantic, most famously the Aiguilles de Port-Coton that Claude Monet came to paint. The gentler eastern side shelters white-washed harbours, sandy coves and the Vauban citadel guarding Le Palais. Reached by ferry from Quiberon, the island is a paradise for walkers on its coastal path, for cyclists and for anyone seeking sea light, cliff-top drama and the salt-scented calm of a true Breton island. Belle-Île more than lives up to its name.
