About Cap Gris-Nez

The closest point of France to England — barely 28 kilometres of sea separate it from the cliffs of Dover — Cap Gris-Nez is a rugged brown-stone headland on the Côte d'Opale where the wind rarely rests. Its cliffs and heaths are a vital staging post on one of Europe's great bird migration routes, and thousands of raptors, seabirds and songbirds pass overhead each spring and autumn. A working lighthouse warns ships through the busiest shipping lane in the world, while old wartime bunkers recall the cape's strategic past. Walkers follow the coastal path over the windswept turf between beaches and cliffs. Wild, breezy and steeped in the traffic of the sea, Cap Gris-Nez is a dramatic frontier where France gazes across at England.
