About Cascade de Gavarnie

Plunging some 420 metres from the rim of the great Cirque de Gavarnie, the Cascade de Gavarnie is the highest waterfall in mainland France, a slender white ribbon spilling from the snows of the Spanish border deep in the Pyrenees National Park. The cirque itself — a colossal amphitheatre of tiered limestone walls, listed by UNESCO — is one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the country, and an easy, popular walk from the village of Gavarnie leads across meadows to the foot of the falls. The flow is at its most thunderous in late spring and early summer as the high snowfields melt. Framed by 3,000-metre peaks and immortalised by Romantic poets and painters, Gavarnie is a Pyrenean masterpiece.
