About Cascade de la Beaume
A little-known gem of the Haute-Loire, the Cascade de la Beaume drops 27 metres over a wall of dark volcanic basalt near the village of Solignac-sur-Loire, not far from Le Puy-en-Velay. The river Beaume spills cleanly over the rim of an old lava flow, framed by the geometric columns of cooled basalt so typical of the Velay country, before hurrying on to join the young Loire nearby. A short path leads to viewpoints above and below the falls, best in spring or after rain when the flow is strong. Set in the wild volcanic landscape of the Devès plateau, this graceful cascade is a rewarding stop for travellers exploring the dramatic scenery around the Loire's source.
