About Cascade de Runes

High on the southern flank of the Mont Lozère in the Cévennes National Park, the Cascade de Runes drops nearly 60 metres in slender ribbons of white water down a granite mountainside above the hamlet of Runes, near Fraissinet-de-Lozère. Fed by streams from the great granite dome above, it is one of the tallest waterfalls in the Cévennes, and a short, steep footpath from the village leads to viewpoints facing the falls. The surrounding landscape of chestnut terraces, broom and bare granite is classic Cévennes country, wild and sparsely peopled. Best after rain or spring snowmelt, when the cascade roars down the slope, Runes is a fine, uncrowded reward for walkers exploring the flanks of the Mont Lozère.
