About Cascade du Déroc
On the wild volcanic plateau of the Aubrac near Nasbinals, the Cascade du Déroc drops some 30 metres over a rim of dark basalt into a green amphitheatre — and hides a secret: behind the falling water lies a shallow cave roofed with hexagonal columns of cooled lava. Reached by an easy walk across the open, treeless pastures of the high Aubrac, past grazing cattle and drystone shelters, it is one of the emblematic sights of this austere and beautiful upland. The setting is at its most striking in early summer, when the meadows blaze with wildflowers and the snowmelt keeps the cascade flowing strong. Remote and elemental, the Déroc captures the raw, windswept spirit of the Aubrac.
