About Cascade du Ray-Pic
One of the most beautiful volcanic waterfalls in France, the Cascade du Ray-Pic pours over an ancient lava flow high in the Ardèche Cévennes near Péreyres. The river Bourges spills in two leaps down a wall of dark basalt, framed by extraordinary organ-pipe columns of cooled lava, into a clear plunge pool below. A short but steep footpath descends through chestnut woods to a viewpoint at the foot of the falls, a classified natural site set above 1,000 metres. Powerful after rain or snowmelt and shaded even in summer, the Ray-Pic is a striking meeting of water and volcano — a reminder that the wild Ardèche uplands were shaped by fire long before the river carved its way through.
