About Forêt de Chaux
Between Dole and the river Doubs, the Forêt de Chaux is one of the largest broadleaf forests in France, a vast, flat expanse of oak and hornbeam that was for centuries the industrial heart of the Jura. Its wood fuelled charcoal-burners, glassworks and the great royal saltworks of Arc-et-Senans nearby, and the forest still hides the traces of the woodcutters and charcoal-makers who lived deep among the trees. Today its endless quiet rides are a haven for walkers, cyclists and riders, and for deer, boar and woodland birds. Huge, level and deeply peaceful, threaded with reconstructed charcoal-burners' huts that tell its story, the Forêt de Chaux is a green immensity at the gates of the Franche-Comté.
