About Forêt de Compiègne
One of the great royal forests of France, the Forêt de Compiègne spreads its oaks and beeches over 14,000 hectares beside the Oise, long a favoured hunting ground of kings and emperors who rode out from the vast palace of Compiègne. Laced with straight rides radiating from grand crossroads, it is a paradise for walkers, cyclists and riders. At its heart lies a place of solemn history: the Clairière de l'Armistice, where the armistice ending the First World War was signed in a railway carriage in 1918 — and where France's surrender was staged in 1940. Combining stately woodland, imperial heritage and one of the most poignant memorial sites in the country, Compiègne is a forest thick with history.
