About Forêt de Haguenau

On the sandy plain north of Strasbourg, the Forêt de Haguenau is one of the largest forests in France and the biggest in Alsace, unusual for its great stands of Scots and maritime pine mixed with ancient oak. Once a favoured hunting ground of the Holy Roman Emperors, it hides prehistoric burial mounds and old military remains beneath its trees. Its light, sandy soils support a distinctive flora and fauna, and its shaded rides are much loved by walkers, cyclists and mushroom-gatherers from the surrounding towns. Peaceful and unexpectedly wild so close to the Rhine cities, the Forêt de Haguenau is a green heartland of northern Alsace, prized as much for its history and biodiversity as for its towering pines.
