About Forêt de la Coubre
Stretching along the wild Atlantic coast of the Arvert peninsula in Charente-Maritime, the Forêt de la Coubre is a vast belt of maritime pine planted to fix the great shifting dunes behind the ocean beaches. Today it is a magnificent playground of forest, dune and surf: a network of cycle paths threads the pines to reach long wild beaches, and the red-and-white striped Phare de la Coubre lighthouse rises above the trees, offering a sweeping view over the Gironde estuary and the sea. Popular for cycling, walking, birdwatching and beach days, and rich in wildlife from deer to migrating birds, the Forêt de la Coubre is one of the loveliest stretches of the French Atlantic coast.
