About Forêt de Mormal

In the green bocage of the Avesnois, the Forêt de Mormal is the largest forest in the Nord, some 9,000 hectares of oak, beech and hornbeam that are all that remain of the great woodlands that once covered the region. Crossed by an old Roman road and long a hunting reserve, it shelters red and roe deer, wild boar and a rich array of woodland birds. Walkers, cyclists and horse-riders follow its shaded rides and forest paths, and the surrounding countryside of hedgerows, ponds and stone villages is among the prettiest in French Flanders. Peaceful, wildlife-rich and steeped in local history, the Forêt de Mormal is the great green lung of the Avesnois and a favourite escape for the towns of the north.
