About Gorges de Daluis
Nicknamed the "Colorado of the Alpes-Maritimes", the Gorges de Daluis are a startling canyon of deep crimson rock in the upper Var valley near Guillaumes. Here the young river Var has cut through ancient red pelite, and the road clings to the cliffs above vivid scarlet walls streaked with green scrub — a landscape utterly unlike the grey limestone gorges elsewhere in Provence. Viewpoints, tunnels and a footbridge over the gorge reveal the river far below, and a marked path descends toward the water and its sculpted red rock. Wild, colourful and often quiet, protected as a regional nature reserve, the Gorges de Daluis are a hidden geological marvel on the scenic road up toward the mountains of the Mercantour.
