About Gorges de Galamus

On the border of the Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales, the Gorges de Galamus are one of the most breathtaking canyons in southern France, a deep, narrow cleft where the river Agly has sliced through the limestone in a dizzying, sun-baked gorge. A vertiginous road, barely wide enough for a single car, clings to the cliff face high above the torrent, while clinging to the rock halfway down is the remarkable Ermitage Saint-Antoine, a hermitage half-built into a natural cave overlooking the abyss. Below, the clear green river forms pools and rapids beloved of canyoning enthusiasts. Dramatic, sun-drenched and thrilling to traverse, the Gorges de Galamus combine spectacular geology, a spectacular perched hermitage and wild bathing in the heart of the Cathar country of Languedoc-Roussillon.
