About Gorges de Kakuetta
In the Basque Pyrenees at Sainte-Engrâce, the Gorges de Kakouetta are a spectacularly narrow, luxuriant canyon where the walls close to just a few metres apart and soar hundreds of metres overhead. A remarkable trail of walkways, footbridges and ladders threads along the torrent for about two kilometres through a dripping world of moss, ferns and rare plants that thrive in the constant shade and humidity — an almost tropical microclimate deep in the mountains. The route passes a slender waterfall and ends at a cave hung with stalactites. Wild, green and dramatically enclosed, Kakouetta is one of the most extraordinary short walks in the Pyrenees, a hidden gorge that feels worlds away from the pastures of the Soule just above.
