About Gorges de l'Hérault

Where the river Hérault escapes the Cévennes on its way to the sea, it carves a beautiful gorge of garrigue-clad cliffs, clear pools and Mediterranean light. At its heart stand two treasures: the medieval village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, one of the finest in France with its Romanesque abbey on the pilgrim road to Santiago, and the ancient Pont du Diable, a UNESCO-listed 11th-century bridge arching over the emerald river. In summer the gorge becomes a favourite for swimming, canoeing and kayaking, while walkers explore the scrubby slopes above and the vast Clamouse cave nearby. Combining wild scenery, turquoise water and outstanding heritage within easy reach of Montpellier, the Gorges de l'Hérault are one of the Languedoc's great days out.
