About Gorges de la Bourne
In the heart of the Vercors, the river Bourne has carved a spectacular gorge of overhanging limestone cliffs between Villard-de-Lans and the Royans lowlands. The narrow road clings improbably to the rock, tunnelling and balconying above the rushing green river, past the famous caves of Choranche and beneath 300-metre walls beloved of climbers. Waterfalls stream from the cliffs after rain, and the vivid colour of the water reflects the pure limestone country all around. A gateway between the high Vercors plateau and the plain, the Gorges de la Bourne combine dramatic driving, world-class caving and rock-climbing, and the wild, forested beauty that makes the Vercors one of the most striking massifs of the French Pre-Alps.
