A short way from Chamonix at Servoz, the Gorges de la Diosaz are one of the most dramatic river gorges in the Alps, a deep, narrow cleft where a mountain torrent has sawn its way through the rock in a series of thundering waterfalls. A remarkable footpath, built into the cliff on walkways and bridges suspended above the churning water, leads visitors up the shadowy chasm past cascade after cascade, cool spray rising from the depths. The famous 19th-century writers and travellers who came here marvelled at its wild beauty, and it remains a refreshing, spectacular walk beneath towering forested walls. Vertiginous, verdant and gloriously cool in summer, the Gorges de la Diosaz are one of the great natural spectacles of the Mont-Blanc country.
