About Gorges de la Jonte

Running parallel to the Gorges du Tarn between the Causse Méjean and the Causse Noir, the Gorges de la Jonte are narrower, wilder and famous above all for their vultures. It was on these dramatic ochre cliffs that griffon vultures were reintroduced to France in the 1980s, and today hundreds soar over the canyon; the Belvédère des Vautours visitor centre near Le Rozier lets you watch them wheel at eye level. Below, the little river Jonte threads between rock towers and beneath the honey-coloured walls that make the gorge a magnet for climbers. Quieter than its famous neighbour and rich in birds of prey, wild flowers and caves, the Jonte is one of the great natural spectacles of the Grands Causses.
