About Gorges de la Sioule
Winding through the wooded hills of the Combrailles in northern Auvergne, the Gorges de la Sioule are a series of deep, green meanders carved by the river Sioule between granite and volcanic country. Crowned by the ruined medieval Château-Rocher on its clifftop spur and spanned in places by old bridges and the great Viaduc des Fades, the gorges are a paradise for fly-fishers, canoeists and walkers. Quiet roads follow the loops of the clear river, past forest, meadow and sleepy villages, and viewpoints reveal the water curling far below. Less known than the great canyons of the south but genuinely wild and unspoilt, the Gorges de la Sioule offer a peaceful, timeless slice of the Auvergne backcountry.
