About Gorges du Chassezac

On the borders of the Ardèche, Lozère and Gard, the river Chassezac has carved a series of wild, cliff-lined gorges through granite and limestone on its way to join the Ardèche. Deep, clear pools, sheer walls up to 100 metres high and quiet forested reaches make it a favourite for swimming, canoeing and, above all, rock-climbing — the crags around Casteljau and Chassezac are among the best in the region. Less crowded than the famous Ardèche gorges nearby, it keeps a secret, unspoilt feel, with prehistoric dolmens, chestnut woods and old stone hamlets scattered above the water. Warm, green and gently adventurous, the Gorges du Chassezac are a rewarding discovery for lovers of clear rivers and southern rock.
