About Gorges du Cians
A twin to the nearby Gorges de Daluis, the Gorges du Cians plunge through the mountains above Beuil in the Alpes-Maritimes in a riot of deep red rock. Over its upper reaches the little river Cians has sawn a slot through ancient crimson pelite, and the road threads beneath overhanging scarlet cliffs and through short tunnels, at times barely wider than a car. Lower down the canyon opens into greener, wooded stretches. Viewpoints and short paths reveal the torrent foaming far below, and the drive links the sunlit Var valley to the ski villages and peaks of the Mercantour. Dramatic, colourful and wonderfully wild, the Gorges du Cians are one of the great scenic roads of the southern Alps.
