About Gorges du Gardon
Just upstream from the mighty Pont du Gard, the river Gardon winds through a beautiful gorge of white limestone cliffs, garrigue and clear green pools between Russan and Collias. In summer the water shrinks to a string of turquoise bathing holes beloved of swimmers and canoeists, who paddle beneath the crags past caves and the hermitage of Sainte-Baume. Marked footpaths thread the wild, sun-baked plateau above, home to Bonelli's eagles, beavers and rich Mediterranean flora, all protected within a classified Grand Site. Combining wild scenery, cool water and the extraordinary Roman heritage of the Pont du Gard downstream, the Gorges du Gardon are one of the most rewarding natural escapes in the sun-drenched hinterland of Nîmes and Uzès.
