About Gorges du Régalon
On the southern edge of the Luberon near Cheval-Blanc, the Gorges du Régalon are an extraordinary slot canyon where the limestone walls close to less than a metre apart and soar overhead, in places roofed by fallen boulders that turn the passage into a tunnel. Usually dry, the narrow bed makes a thrilling, easy walk — a scramble through cool shade between towering rock, emerging among ancient olive groves and Mediterranean scrub. Because the gorge can flood dangerously in heavy rain, it is walked only in dry weather, and a torch is handy for the darkest stretches. Unlike any other site in Provence, the Régalon offers the drama of a great canyon compressed into an intimate, cathedral-like crack in the rock.
