About Gorges du Tarn
Winding for some 50 kilometres between the vast limestone plateaus of the Causse Méjean and the Causse de Sauveterre, the Gorges du Tarn form one of the most magnificent canyons in France. The clear green river loops beneath sheer 500-metre cliffs, past clinging medieval villages, ruined castles and clifftop hamlets that seem to grow from the rock. It is a paradise for canoeing and kayaking, with gentle stretches and lively rapids, while scenic roads and belvederes trace the rim high above. Griffon vultures wheel over the gorge, reintroduced to these cliffs and now a common sight. Part of the UNESCO-listed Causses and Cévennes landscape, the Gorges du Tarn combine wild grandeur, river adventure and centuries of human history carved into stone.
