About Gorges du Verdon

Often called the Grand Canyon of Europe, the Gorges du Verdon slice for some 25 kilometres through the limestone plateaus of Haute-Provence, their pale cliffs plunging as much as 700 metres to the astonishing turquoise river far below. It is one of the most beautiful natural sites in France, ringed by two clifftop scenic drives — the Route des Crêtes and the Corniche Sublime — that link viewpoint after dizzying viewpoint. Down in the canyon, walkers tackle the vertiginous Sentier Blanc-Martel, while kayakers, climbers and swimmers make the most of the emerald water, which flows out into the great Lac de Sainte-Croix at the gorge's mouth. Vast, vertical and vividly coloured, the Verdon is Provence at its most spectacular.
