In the Montagne Noire near Carcassonne, the Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine is one of the largest chasms open to visitors in the world — a void so vast that the Eiffel Tower could stand inside it with room to spare. Entering partway up the wall of the abyss, visitors follow a balcony carved into the rock, gazing across and down into a colossal darkness studded with immense concretions, delicate aragonite crystals and a plunging shaft that drops far below their feet. The sheer scale, dramatised by careful lighting, is genuinely vertiginous. Formed over millions of years by an underground river, this giant hollow is a humbling testament to the power of water and time. Immense, spectacular and unforgettable, the Gouffre de Cabrespine is one of the great underground marvels of southern France.
