About Gouffre de Poudrey

Near Étalans in the Doubs, the Gouffre de Poudrey is one of the largest single caverns open to visitors in France, a colossal underground chamber so vast that a cathedral could stand within it. Reached down a long stairway into the earth, the great void opens to reveal a forest of massive stalagmites rising from the floor and a roof lost in darkness far overhead, all set aglow by a dramatic sound-and-light show. Formed over some seventy million years as water dissolved the limestone of the Jura, the chamber is a humbling reminder of the scale of nature's slow underground work. Immense, atmospheric and easy to visit, the Gouffre de Poudrey is one of the great subterranean spectacles of eastern France.
