About Gouffre de Proumeyssac

Known as the "Crystal Cathedral" of the Périgord, the Gouffre de Proumeyssac is the largest developed cavern in the Dordogne, a vast domed void hung with a dazzling profusion of stalactites, draperies and crystalline concretions. Long feared by locals as a bottomless pit, it was first explored in the 19th century and is now entered down a spiralling gallery — or, for the adventurous, lowered into the dark in a suspended basket, just as the first explorers were. Inside, a magnificent sound-and-light show plays over the towering formations while water drips endlessly from the roof. Grand, theatrical and geologically superb, the Gouffre de Proumeyssac is one of the great show-caves of France and a highlight of the cave-rich Périgord Noir.
