About Grand Ballon
The Grand Ballon is the highest summit of the Vosges, rising to 1,424 metres above the vineyards of Alsace and instantly recognised by the great white sphere of the radar station on its crown. Reached easily from the Route des Crêtes, its rounded, wind-smoothed top gives a magnificent 360-degree panorama that on clear days sweeps from the Alsace plain and the Black Forest to the snowy wall of the Alps. A monument to mountain troops stands near the summit, and the surrounding high pastures and forests are laced with walking trails in summer and ski runs in winter. Broad, breezy and crowned by its unmistakable dome, the Grand Ballon is the natural high point of the Alsatian mountains.
