Hidden in the wild garrigue near Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey behind Grasse, the Grotte de Baume Obscure is an atmospheric show-cave famed for its beautiful terraced pools — rimstone dams of crystalline calcite that hold sheets of still, mirror-clear water deep beneath the hills. A gently descending path winds through a succession of chambers where fine concretions, draperies and gours are dramatised by a subtle sound-and-light staging designed for a contemplative, almost mystical atmosphere. Cool and silent, it feels a world away from the sun-baked scrubland above. Poetic, beautifully lit and refreshingly serene, the Grotte de Baume Obscure is one of the most evocative caves of the Provençal hinterland, a hidden underground sanctuary behind the perfume capital of Grasse.
