About Grotte de Choranche
At the foot of the great cliffs of the Vercors, the Grotte de Choranche is one of the most beautiful show caves in France, famous for its thousands of slender, translucent "fistulous" stalactites that hang from the ceiling like fine glass straws — an extremely rare formation. Guided tours lead past mirror-still underground pools and an illuminated cavern where the reflections double the delicate forest of stalactites overhead. The cave is also home to the blind cave salamander, the olm, a curious survivor of the underground world. Set beneath towering rock walls in the wild Bourne gorge, Choranche combines geological wonder with one of the most dramatic natural settings in the Pre-Alps — a magical, cool retreat on the hottest days.
