Near Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert in the Hérault, close to the famous Pont du Diable, the Grotte de Clamouse is one of the most beautiful and richly decorated show-caves in France, renowned worldwide for the exceptional profusion and delicacy of its crystalline formations. Its chambers are hung with a dazzling array of white aragonite crystals, fragile eccentrics, translucent discs and slender needles, forming displays of a purity that has made the cave a benchmark for cavers and mineralogists. A guided circuit, dramatically lit, winds through galleries where the sheer density of glittering decoration is almost overwhelming. Carved by an underground river that resurges nearby, Clamouse combines geological wonder with a superb setting in the gorges of the Hérault. Dazzling, rare and beautifully staged, it is a jewel of the Languedoc underground.
