About Grotte de domme
Beneath the golden bastide town of Domme, perched high above the Dordogne, lies one of the largest caves open to the public in the Périgord Noir. From an entrance in the market hall of the medieval village, a guided path descends into cool galleries hung with fine white stalactites and stalagmites, where prehistoric people once sheltered and the bones of Ice Age bison have been found. The visit ends with a memorable flourish: emerging from the cliff face by a panoramic lift or terrace, visitors are greeted by one of the most breathtaking views in the whole Dordogne valley, its river winding far below through a patchwork of fields and villages. Combining underground beauty with a sublime clifftop panorama, the Grotte de Domme is a highlight of this magnificent corner of the Périgord.
