About Grotte de Foissac
In the Aveyron near the border with the Lot, the Grotte de Foissac is a beautiful cave with a double appeal: geological splendour and an exceptional prehistoric record. Discovered by cavers in 1959, its galleries are adorned with fine white concretions, delicate draperies and unusual formations shaped like fried eggs and discs. But the cave is above all a prehistoric time-capsule: it was used by Copper Age people some 4,000 years ago as a dwelling and burial place, and preserves their pottery, hearths, footprints and even skeletons, remarkably untouched. A guided visit reveals both the underground beauty and the poignant traces of these ancient lives. Richly decorated and archaeologically precious, the Grotte de Foissac is a fascinating window onto both nature's artistry and humanity's distant past.
