About Grotte de la Fileuse de Verre

At Courniou in the Hérault, on the edge of the Haut-Languedoc, the Grotte de la Devèze is affectionately known as the "Palace of the Glass Spinner" for the extraordinary delicacy of its crystalline decoration. Its chambers are hung with some of the finest aragonite formations in France — needle-thin white crystals, fragile eccentrics and gossamer draperies that seem spun from glass, glittering under the lights. Discovered during the building of a railway tunnel in 1886, the cave also houses France's first museum of speleology at its entrance, telling the story of cave exploration. Refined, sparkling and geologically exquisite, the Grotte de la Devèze — the Fileuse de Verre — is one of the most beautiful and delicate show-caves in the Languedoc, a true jewel-box of underground crystal.
