Perched high above the magnificent Gorges de l'Ardèche, the Grotte de la Madeleine is one of the finest show-caves in the region, opening from a cliff terrace with a sweeping view over the wild limestone canyon below. Inside, a guided path leads through vast chambers adorned with a remarkable variety of concretions — towering stalagmites, cascading white draperies, delicate discs and a great frozen "waterfall" of calcite — brought to life by an evocative sound-and-light show. Formed by water seeping through the Ardèche plateau over millions of years, the cave combines geological splendour with one of the most beautiful settings of any cavern in France. Grand, richly decorated and superbly sited above the gorges, the Grotte de la Madeleine is a highlight of a visit to the Ardèche.
