About Grotte de la Salamandre

Near Méjannes-le-Clap in the Gard, the Grotte de la Salamandre is one of the most spectacular show-caves in France, opened to the public only in 2013 and built around a single, breathtaking chamber of vast dimensions. Visitors descend to a belvedere overlooking a colossal hall where one of the largest free-standing stalagmites in Europe rises from the floor amid a fantastical array of draperies, discs and delicate crystals, all dramatised by a superb, subtle lighting design. For the adventurous, the cave also offers the thrill of descending into the chamber by abseil through a natural shaft, or a via-ferrata route. Grand, beautifully staged and geologically magnificent, the Grotte de la Salamandre is a modern jewel of the French underground and one of the finest cave experiences in the Cévennes country.
