About Grotte de Labeil
At the foot of the great Larzac plateau in the Hérault, the Grotte de Labeil is a resurgence cave carved by an underground river that still flows through its galleries and out into the daylight. For centuries local people used its cool, damp entrance as a natural cellar to ripen cheeses in the Roquefort manner, and the cave's history of shepherds and cheese-makers is part of its charm. Beyond, a guided path leads past waterfalls, pools and fine concretions into the heart of the mountain, where the river murmurs in the darkness. Cool even in the height of summer, steeped in Larzac pastoral tradition and geologically beautiful, the Grotte de Labeil offers a refreshing and atmospheric plunge beneath one of the most striking limestone landscapes of southern France.
