About Grotte de Lascaux

Discovered by four teenagers in 1940 in the Vézère valley of the Dordogne, the Grotte de Lascaux holds some of the most magnificent prehistoric art in the world — a dazzling gallery of bulls, horses, stags and mysterious signs painted around 18,000 years ago, so vivid it has been called the "Sistine Chapel of prehistory". To preserve the fragile originals, now closed to the public, the paintings are recreated with astonishing precision in the nearby facsimiles of Lascaux, where visitors walk through the great Hall of the Bulls and marvel at the skill of Ice Age artists. Part of a UNESCO World Heritage valley rich in decorated caves, Lascaux is a profound encounter with the dawn of human creativity, at the heart of prehistoric Périgord.
