About Grotte des Demoiselles
High above the Hérault valley near Ganges, the Grotte des Demoiselles is one of the most spectacular show caves in France, entered by a funicular railway bored into the mountainside. Its centrepiece is a colossal underground chamber — often likened to a cathedral — dominated by a great stalagmite that, seen from the right angle, resembles a Virgin and Child, giving the cave an air of natural wonder that has drawn visitors for two centuries. All around, immense columns, draperies and organ-pipe formations climb through the darkness, dramatically lit for effect. Once a shelter for hermits and hunted Protestants, and long wrapped in local legend, the Grotte des Demoiselles combines geological grandeur, history and myth beneath the sun-baked garrigue of the Cévennes foothills.
