Carved into a golden cliff overlooking the Vézère near Les Eyzies, the Grotte du Grand Roc is one of the most beautiful crystal caves in the Périgord, famous for its dense array of rare eccentric formations — fragile calcite growths that sprout in defiance of gravity like coral, flowers and fine needles. Discovered in 1924, its single richly decorated gallery runs along the cliff, glittering with draperies, discs and translucent crystals lit to reveal their delicate beauty. From the entrance terrace, a lovely view opens over the wooded Vézère valley, heart of France's prehistoric country. Compact, dazzling and superbly sited, the Grotte du Grand Roc is a gem of the underground Périgord and an easy, rewarding stop amid the prehistoric riches of Les Eyzies.
